Karachi police officer injured in alleged self-harm incident

A police officer in Karachi was seriously injured on Thursday after allegedly attempting self-harm at his residence, police officials said.
According to police, the incident took place in the Jamshed Road area where the officer reportedly set himself on fire inside his home after pouring a flammable substance on his body. He sustained severe injuries and was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. Authorities said his condition is being closely monitored, while further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
Police officials have not yet confirmed the motive behind the alleged attempt and said statements from family members and colleagues are being recorded as part of the inquiry. Initial reports suggest that personal or psychological factors may be involved, but investigators have stressed that it is too early to draw conclusions.
Street crime spikes in Karachi as theft and snatching cases rise
Separately, in another development in Karachi’s crime situation, police conducted two encounters in Orangi Town and Gulistan-e-Johar, resulting in the arrest of three suspected robbers, including one who was injured during the exchange of fire. One accomplice managed to escape from the scene.
Police said the suspects were allegedly involved in street crimes and were being tracked for some time based on intelligence inputs. Weapons were also recovered from their possession, and a search operation has been launched to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
Authorities have said that crime response operations in the city will continue as part of ongoing efforts to curb street crime and improve law and order. Meanwhile, the investigation into the police officer’s condition remains a priority, with senior officials seeking a detailed report on the incident.
The twin developments highlight both the growing challenges of mental health within law enforcement personnel and the continued security operations targeting criminal networks in Karachi.
